All about water repellents :

What is a water repellent and oil repellent product ?

A water repellent is a protective product. It is a treatment that allows the waterproofing of surfaces such as walls, facades, roofs, terraces, and floors. Applying water repellent to your surfaces protects them from dirt, facilitates maintenance, prevents water and moisture infiltration, and even improves their lifespan. There are two types of water repellents: water-based and solvent-based products.

  • Water-based water repellents are composed of water and are therefore more human and environmentally friendly. These waterproofing agents allow the surface to breathe and can be covered afterwards. However, they take longer to dry.
  • Solvent-based water repellents penetrate the surface more quickly and have a faster drying time.

An oil repellent is also a protective product that prevents the penetration of grease into surfaces.

When and how to apply a water repellent ?

A water repellent can be applied to new or old surfaces during construction or renovation :

  • On exterior surfaces such as brick, stone, or concrete walls to protect them from rain and moisture.
  • On terraces, walkways, or sidewalks to prevent water penetration and avoid damage caused by freezing and thawing.
  • On roofs to protect against water infiltration.
  • On outdoor wooden surfaces to extend their lifespan by protecting them from moisture.

A water repellent should be applied in dry weather and at a temperature between 5 and 25°C to optimize its effectiveness. It is important not to apply a water repellent before heavy rain, as it could wash off the product, making the treatment ineffective.

SCALP water repellents can be applied with a roller, manual sprayer, or airless sprayer. They are also ready-to-use, making them easy to apply.

Can you paint after applying a water repellent ?

A water repellent prevents liquid penetration into the surface and ensures its waterproofing. Once treated, the surface becomes impermeable to all liquids. Therefore, it is not possible to apply paint to a water-repellent surface because the paint will not adhere. However, there are colored water repellents that allow you to protect and tint the surface simultaneously.

SCALPFUGE COLOR is a 4-in-1 product that waterproofs, mineralizes, renovates, and protects. It is available in 11 shades and can be applied to roofs, facades, walls, and exterior floors.

Waterproofers: Protect your exterior surfaces

Facade water repellents

Water repellents are typically liquid and are mostly colorless, although colored water repellents also exist. This type of product can be applied to a wide range of surfaces such as stone, brick, slate, tile, concrete, cement, lime plaster, etc.

Roof water repellents

Waterproofing your roof is important to prevent climate changes from causing significant damage, which would require much larger repairs. Applying a water repellent to your roof improves its resistance to water penetration, humidity, pollution, and weather conditions. Additionally, this type of treatment makes cleaning easier as dirt cannot deeply penetrate. However, it is crucial that the roof be clean before waterproofing. For this, a roof cleaner or anti-moss product such as SCALP ANTI-M to remove green deposits (moss, lichens, algae, etc.). Besides protecting, a water repellent can also color and refresh the appearance of materials. At SCALP, both transparent and colored water repellents are available.

  • Transparent water repellents are colorless and completely invisible once applied to the surface. This type of treatment, such as SCALPFUGE 35 or l’AQUAFUGE 18, can be applied with a roller or with a manual sprayer.
  • Colored water repellents, like SCALP HYDROCOLOR PAE or SCALPFUGE COLOR, not only protect the surface but also renovate it and give it new life by coloring it.

Terrace water repellents

Protecting your terrace with a water repellent will make cleaning easier and extend its lifespan. This type of treatment protects against water infiltration, coffee, oil, grease, etc. For example, SCALP ANTI-TACHES 07 is a transparent and non-filmogenic oil and water repellent. This product does not form an additional layer on the surface and can be applied to stone, marble, sandstone, granite, wood, or even terracotta.
